The Best AI Visibility Tools, and What Each One Can't Tell You

The best AI visibility tool is the one that tells you when an AI answer sends you a paying visitor, and every other tool on the market stops just short of that. Most will show you a crawler hit your robots.txt, or that a referral came in from Perplexity. Few will tell you that a ChatGPT answer sent someone to your pricing page, they clicked, and they bought. That gap is why you need more than one tool, and why Kymo fills the part the others leave open.
What "best AI visibility tools" actually means
You want to know three things. Who crawls your site, what they fetch, and what it's worth. The first question is easy to answer. The second takes a little more work. The third is where almost every tool goes quiet.
The market is split into three layers. There are free Google tools that show you fragments. There are dedicated AI trackers that show you crawler activity in detail. And there are SEO suites like Semrush or Ahrefs that have bolted on an AI feature. Each layer is good at something. None of them are good at everything.
Google Search Console: free, but it shows you only Google
Search Console is genuinely useful. It is also the only tool you need for understanding Google, and the worst possible tool for understanding AI visibility.
The core problem is that it is free, so everyone uses it, and it only covers Google. Googlebot is in Kymo's registry as an indexing crawler, and it can lead to referral traffic. Search Console will show you how much of your traffic comes from Google search. It will not show you a single ChatGPT answer, one Claude fetch, or a PerplexityBot crawl. Google keeps its own AI answers and its own crawler data in a box labelled "search". If your traffic shifts from Google to ChatGPT, Search Console shows you a flat line while your revenue drops.
Search Console also cannot tie a visit to a purchase. It tells you a query had 100 clicks. It does not tell you if those clicks converted. For a solo builder who needs to know if SEO is paying rent, that is a critical blind spot.
GA4: the wrong shape for this problem
Google Analytics 4 is the default choice for human traffic, and it is a poor choice for AI visibility. We have covered why GA4 can't show you AI citations in detail, but the short version is this. GA4 has no idea what an AI answer is. It sees a referrer from Perplexity and shows you a session. It does not see the prompt that triggered the answer, the specific page the AI fetched, or whether that session came from a citation or from a user typing your domain in by hand.
GA4 is also built on cookies and identifiers that AI crawlers simply do not carry. A crawler like GPTBot or ClaudeBot is not a person with a browser. It will not load your tag in a way GA4 counts. So the most interesting traffic on your site, the traffic that tells you how AI sees you, is nearly invisible.
The cookieless identity approach is not a feature Kymo added for privacy theatre. It is the only way to count a crawler that has no cookies, no JavaScript, and no interest in your tag. A server-side receiver is the only honest way to see it.
Dedicated AI trackers: detailed crawler logs, zero revenue data
This is the layer where you will find tools that promise to show you your "AI visibility score". Some of them are genuinely good at the crawler part. They will show you that GPTBot (OpenAI's training crawler) hit your site at 2am, that PerplexityBot indexed your pricing page, and that Claude-User fetched a live answer for someone.
That data is valuable. It is the first layer of the answer. But it is a log, not a business report. These tools tell you a crawler arrived. They do not tell you if that crawl resulted in a referral, a click, or a sale. They cannot, because most of them do not track human traffic at all. They are building a picture of what AI reads, not what AI sends.
Some of these tools also sell a "score". You will see a number from 0 to 100 that claims to measure your AI visibility. We wrote about what the AI Visibility Score measures and what a good one is, and the short version is that any score is a guess about the future. No tool can see the inside of ChatGPT's answer. What a score can do is give you a baseline over time, so you can tell if you are going backwards. Treat it as a trend, not a truth.
Semrush and Ahrefs: broad suites with a narrow AI feature
The big SEO platforms have started adding AI panels. They are useful if you already pay for them. They will show you which of your pages appear in AI answers, at least some of the time, and they will show you which competitors are winning. They are also built for agencies and in-house SEO teams, which means they are priced and designed for people who do this for a living.
Here is a comparison of what the major categories can and cannot do.

The notable thing is the last column. Semrush and Ahrefs are research tools. They show you the battlefield from a helicopter. Kymo is a diagnostic tool. It shows you what your own site experienced, and what came of it.
Perplexity is not training models, and other crawler facts worth getting right
Before you pick a tool, it helps to understand what you are tracking. The AI crawler landscape is young and full of misinformation. A few facts worth knowing, because they change how you read your logs.
Perplexity has no training crawler. It builds no foundation models. Both of its agents are retrieval. PerplexityBot indexes your site ahead of time, like a search engine. Perplexity-User fetches a page live to answer one person's question. There is no third Perplexity agent. If a tool shows you one, it is guessing.
Claude-SearchBot is the indexer, and Claude-User is the live fetcher. Published directories often reverse these two. Do not trust a tool that gets this backwards. OpenAI is different. OAI-SearchBot is indexing, and ChatGPT-User is the live fetch. A provider's SearchBot and its -User agent are never the same category.
Blocking a training crawler does not remove a site from that operator's AI answers. The indexing and live-fetch agents are separate tokens with separate robots.txt rules. You can block GPTBot and still be fetched by ChatGPT-User. This is the GEO vs SEO distinction in action. The knowledge base for answers is built by indexing agents. The live answer comes from the user agent. If you want to be cited, you need to be crawlable by the indexer and fetchable by the live agent.
One more disputed point. Perplexity-User is documented as exempt from robots.txt because a user asked for the fetch. Cloudflare published evidence in August 2025 of undeclared Perplexity crawlers, and Perplexity disputed it. Treat that as an unresolved finding, not a settled fact.
Where Kymo actually sits
Kymo is a single dashboard for human visitors and AI crawlers. It is not a rival to the dedicated trackers. It is the layer that tells you what those crawler visits are worth.

That classification is the difference. Most tools flatten all crawlers into one line. Kymo separates the crawler that is building a knowledge base for tomorrow from the live fetch that is answering a customer right now. The live fetch is the one that can send you a visitor. The training crawl is the one that builds the model that, later, will decide whether to cite you.

The limit of comparison: no one sees inside the answer
There is a boundary every tool hits, including Kymo. No analytics platform can see the inside of ChatGPT's response. You cannot know the exact wording of the answer that cited you, because that answer is generated per request and served to one person. What you can see is the behaviour around the answer. A tool can infer likely prompts from the pages that were fetched. It can see confirmed click-throughs from AI referrals. It cannot read the transcript.
