Why GA4 Can't Show You AI Citations

GA4 can't show you AI citations because it never classifies AI traffic in the first place. It was built for a web where Google sent you humans, and it does that job fine. But search is no longer just Google.

The rise of AI answers means a growing share of your discovery happens when a chatbot reads your site and decides whether to mention you. That activity is invisible in GA4, and you cannot improve what you do not measure.

GA4's blind spot is structural, not a settings issue

GA4 does not have a dimension for "AI crawler". It has a "Bot" category, but that's a bucket designed for filtering junk, not for understanding opportunity. When AI services crawl your site, their user agents appear as undefined or as generic bots, and GA4 gives you no way to understand what they are doing there.

That is a potential customer. GPTBot (OpenAI's training crawler) is reading your content to train a model; it may shape thousands of future answers. Google-Extended (a robots.txt control token, not a crawler) controls whether your content influences Gemini answers.

Those are three different jobs with three different outcomes. GA4 treats them all as noise.

The measurement gap: cookies, scripts, and invisible requests

GA4 tracks human visitors by loading a JavaScript snippet that drops a cookie or uses localStorage. That works for people with browsers. AI crawlers do not run JavaScript. They fetch your HTML, read it, and leave. No cookie is set, no pageview event fires, no session is recorded.

The visitor identifier in GA4 is a client-side construct. It needs a browser to execute code. A crawler is a server-side HTTP client. It makes a request, receives a response, and moves on. Nothing in that exchange touches GA4's tracking.

This is also why Kymo is a server-side receiver. Your pages contain a small script (or you send events server-side), but the site's visitor counter, and especially the AI crawler classification, happens by reading the request directly. It keeps no raw IP, it keeps no human user-agent, and it hashes identifiers per day. But a crawler's user agent is recorded so you can audit the classification.

  2. Which pages were fetched. That tells you what content AI engines value.
