An AEO Strategy a Solo Founder Can Actually Run

The short answer is yes, you can run a decent AEO strategy alone, and you can do most of it in a few afternoons. You do not need an agency, a content team, or a stack of SEO tools. You need a clear view of how AI systems see your site, and a repeatable checklist. That is what this is.

Search is changing. Google still matters, but more and more people get answers from ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, and AI Overviews. AEO, answer engine optimization, is the practice of making your site the source an AI assistant picks. For a solo founder, the goal is not to rank for a thousand keywords. The goal is to be the clear, citable answer for the questions your best customers actually ask.

Step 1: Decide which AI crawlers are allowed on your site

Your robots.txt file is the front door. AI crawlers split into three categories: training, indexing, and live answer fetches. You want the indexing and live fetch crawlers in. You can keep the training crawlers out if you want, and many small sites do. Blocking a training crawler does not remove you from that company's AI answers. The indexing and live fetch agents are separate tokens, so GPTBot (OpenAI's training crawler) can be blocked while OAI-SearchBot and ChatGPT-User still work normally.

Two control tokens matter here. Google-Extended (a robots.txt control token, not a crawler) and Applebot-Extended. They are not user agents. They do not visit your site. This takes about twenty minutes. The payoff is that you stop leaking crawl budget to bulk training scrapers while keeping the crawlers that can send you real referral traffic.

Step 2: Make your content answer-shaped

AI answer engines do not read your site like a human skimming a blog post. They fetch a page, extract a passage, and decide whether it answers the question. You want the answer to be the first thing on the page.

For each of your top five money pages, put a direct answer in the first two sentences. Format it as a question and answer. Use the actual question a customer would type into ChatGPT.

A sentence like "Our commercial oven repair service covers Melbourne and handles emergency callouts within 24 hours" beats a paragraph of introduction every time.

Keep the structure simple. Plain HTML. No "click to expand" accordions. No JavaScript-rendered answers. If the fetch happens at 3 a.m., the crawler checks what the server sends back without running scripts. Make sure that raw HTML contains the answer.

You also need clean, up-to-date business facts. AI systems pull physical location, hours, and service area from structured data and business directories. Step 3: Submit to the sources AI assistants trust

AI assistants do not fetch your site first. They fetch their own indexes, and they lean on a handful of established sources. For local businesses, the critical ones are Google Business Profile, Apple Business Connect, Bing Places, and Yelp. If you have not claimed these, do it this week. Most business owners who "set up" Google Business Profile three years ago never verified the other directories. Perplexity pulls from Bing. Apple's Siri and Apple Intelligence pull from Apple Business Connect. ChatGPT pulls from a mix of search indexes and partner sources. You want the same facts in every place, same name, same address, same phone.

Step 4: Measure before you change anything else

You cannot improve what you do not measure. Standard web analytics will not show you AI crawler visits. GA4 does not classify ChatGPT-User as an answer engine fetch. You need a tool that separates human visitors from AI agents, and that breaks the AI agents into their categories.

Step 5: Build a monthly feedback loop

You will not see AI referral traffic appear overnight. The loop works in monthly increments. At the start of each month, open the AI Visibility report and look at which pages AI assistants fetched in the last 30 days.

If a page got fetched but not cited, tighten the answer. Put the response earlier in the page. Remove ambiguous phrasing.

If a page got cited but sent little referral traffic, look at the likely prompts behind those fetches. Write a follow-up page that answers the next logical question.

If a page got no AI visits at all, check your robots.txt, check your internal links to that page, and consider whether the page answers a question people actually ask.

The honest caveat
